Analyze this!
Now, that you've viewed a demonstration on how to rhetorically analyze, why don't you see how much you've really learned.
Now, you most likely haven't covered more than a couple of rhetorical terms, so feel free to describe the rhetorical effects without naming them. However, if you do know the terms, feel free to name them.
Select any of the rhetorical devices you've learned about so far and write a couple of paragraphs that attempt to analyze the video above. Your goal is to isolate the choices made by the author, and attempt to paint a clear picture of the moves being made. As you do this, don't forget to consider the audience, purpose and context of the advertisement. A good rhetorical analyst understands that sometimes in order to form a clear picture of the audience, context and purpose, some research is needed. So, feel free to do some external research.
Put differently, you might ask yourself these questions:
-
Who is the maker of this advert?
-
Why did they make this advert?
-
What about when it was made might affect the audience's acceptance of it?
-
Who is the audience being targeted by the video?
As you write, try to use at least three pieces of evidence from the video (the author's rhetorical choices) and try to explain why those work for the audience of the text.
For example, you might explain how you believe the author builds their ethos by providing a few examples or rhetorical choices from the video above to show this; or, you might explain how the author uses arrangement to build their logos, or arouses certain emotions in their audience; and so on
Once you're done, share your argumentative piece of writing (300 words or more) in the class forum with your other classmates and teacher.
